Filipino chef Anton Amoncio bags ‘Food Hero Asia’ grand prize, including a hosting stint on Asian Food Channel, The Food Network

Manila, Philippines — Anton Amoncio clinched the top prize in the “Food Hero Asia” grand finals that was held in Singapore on Thursday, his management firm Asian Artists Agency announced on Thursday night.

As part of the grand prize, the 27-year-old chef Anton becomes a new host for a number of programs shown on Asian Food Channel (AFC) and The Food Network channel.

Chef Anton Amoncio’s Cheesy Lamb Rack Kaldereta outclassed the entries of three other finalists from other Southeast Asian nations. In addition to hosting, grand prize also comes with $5,500 USD worth of travel vouchers.

The Manila-based chef was selected as one of the finalists when he presented videos of his signature Filipino dishes “Tinola” and “Fried Chicken Adobo sa Gata.”

The “Tinola” food delicacy is a special dish for the chef due to it is what his grandmother prepared for him whenever he was sick. Anton called the dish as his recovery soup, and he considers his grandmother his “food hero.”

Winning the grand prize in the contest in Singapore, he said for sure that his grandmother is truly proud of him.

Chef Anton said that he learned two rules in the kitchen from his mother. One is if “you like to cook; you cook, but don’t mess it up.” And the other one was, “You make mistakes; you live with it and do better.”

Anton Amoncio said as a chef, he believes that he needs to continuously improve himself and be better on cooking. “Learning is constant,” Anton says. “You always need to improve yourself constantly or you get dull.”

Chef Amoncio is a graduate of the Center for Culinary Arts in Quezon City. Before pursuing his craft in cooking, he took a two-year music production course at the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde.

During the competition in Singapore and the awarding ceremonies on Thursday night, Amoncio was cheered on by the Philippine television personality Boy Abunda, president and chief executive officer of the Asian Artists Agency.
