The big 2017 NBA Draft rumor on Friday had the Philadelphia 76ers trying to work on a trade deal to lure away the Boston Celtics’ No. 1 overall pick, but now there reportedly is another professional basketball franchise seriously considering to acquire that No. 1 selection — the Los Angeles Lakers.
The former University of Washington star Markelle Fultz worked out for the purple and gold team on Thursday, and director of basketball operations for the Lakers Magic Johnson “is in love” with Fultz, according to Jonathan Givony of Draft Express.
Givony sent out a series of tweets on Friday, stating that Fultz “murdered” his workout. The prospect has reportedly shot the ball “very well,” showed off a 40-inch vertical leap and played some 2-on-2 competition.
However, Fultz is the major consensus No. 1 overall pick, and since the Los Angeles hold the No. 2 draft pick, the ball club would likely have trade up to the top spot to acquire him.
Givony says “multiple sources” are pointing to the Lakers and they might be willing to move forward Julius Randle and the No. 2 draft selection to Boston Celtics to get that desirable No. 1 pick.
Of course, a lot of NBA rumors have surrounded the top of this draft class for the past few weeks now. At one point, the Los Angeles were said to be eyeing trading down in the first round.
While the Lakers have expressed interest in Josh Jackson, many have said the former Kansas star’s workout in Los Angeles, “did not go well at all.” Givony said Jackson massively struggled with his shooting and handles.
