MANILA, Philippines – The NLEX Road Warriors has managed to outscore the GlobalPort Batang Pier, 114-98, for its second consecutive victory to strengthen its playoff berth in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governors’ Cup on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The 37-year-old Chico Lanete restricted the NLEX Road Warriors’ 17-3 run across the final two quarters with 9:37 time remaining on the clock to distance themselves from the GlobalPort Batang Pier with a 96-82 lead.
The Road Warriors has improved to 5-5 for sixth seed in the 12-team ladder in the PBA Governors’ Cup while the Batang Pier nosedived to their third consecutive loss for a 3-7 losing streak.
The Road Warriors import Bill Walker led NLEX with 35 points but he wasn’t the only one on the team to make the Batang Pier smell the scent of burning rubber.
The NLEX Road Warriors led by as much as 21 points after a basket from Sean Anthony at the 2:46 time left of the fourth quarter before settling for a 16-point lead. The GlobalPort still have a slim shot at making it into the quarterfinals but the the team will need some help from the other squad. The Batang Pier will be needing Alaska Aces and Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to lose their remaining contest and hope that the result favors them.
Chico Lanete contributed 25 points for the NLEX Road Warriors while Jonas Villanueva had 14 points. Meanwhile, Stanley Pringle and Terrence Romeo of the Globalport Batang Pier carried the scoring load for their organization combining for 53 points in the defeat. It was a three-pronged attack for the Batang Pier who were still without their head coach Johnedel Cardel. Pringle concluded the game with 27 points with 2 rebounds and 7 assists while Terence Romeo completed in 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Their import Mike Glover had 21 points and 14 rebounds.
